Public health is an interdisciplinary subject defined as “the science and art of preventing disease”, as given by Winslow 1920, that helps in improvement of quality of life through organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals. Under public health, C S D R take initiatives to promote common public health awareness, healthy environment and address the root causes of environmental and social threats to health. Globally it is estimated that due to environmental factors, 23% of death and 24% of burden of disease occurs. Social inequality has also created a significant impact of environment on health. Global burden of diseases can be minimized through focusing and reducing the environmental and social risk factors. Therefore, as an initiatives C S D R includes the promotion of safe drinking water and its storage, better hygiene, management of toxic substances, energy, transport and agriculture.
C S D R focuses on research and development on the following
- Air, water, soil and noise pollution control, monitoring and health issues
- Nutrition sensitive agriculture to ensure nutrition and food security for human well being
- Psychological impacts on public health due to environmental disaster and natural hazards
- Heavy metal toxicity, risk assessment, occupational hazards and its mitigation
- Waste management including its disposal and minimization through clean and green technology and transformation of waste to wealth
